Local Students Score Well on National Spanish Exam
Congratulations to several world language students from East Central High School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations.
Students from East Central High School earned a total of 1 bronze medal along with 7 honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012.”
Students from East Central High School have obtained high achievement on these exams over the past two years and were taught by Spanish teacher, Profesora Christie Dunkley.
The National Spanish Examinations were administered in Spanish 2, 3 and 4 classes, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
The following students received honorable mention: Bailey Beckman, Alex Clennon, Joyce Domogalla, Stuart Lourey, Ursula Lundberg-Grygelko, Jenna Miller, and Marissa Swegle. Amanda Downs received the Bronze medal and will be eligible for the Senior Scholarship sponsored by the AATSP.

Upcoming Events
Spring is a busy time at East Central. Graduation will be on June 3rd, starting at 1:30 PM. Another important event for seniors is Baccalaureate on Wednesday, May 30th, starting at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium. There are many events which lead up to that for Seniors, so please check out the Memo to Parents which was sent out in April. Seniors may also wish to check out the Senior Timeline which has many important dates and events for them.
An exciting day is happening on Friday, May 18th, for the Kindergarten students. At 2:00 PM they will have their Kindergarten Graduation in the Auditorium. Parents are highly encouraged to attend.
Prom is coming up quick. Prom is scheduled for May 19th. Grand March will begin at 4:00 PM in the East Central Auditorium. Students who are interested in participating in Grand March need to sign up in Mr. Walker's room. Students interested in going to Prom need to sign up in Mrs. Bonnin's room. Cost is $20 per person.
The Elementary Track & Field day will be on May 24th this year. Many activities are planned for that day. Come out and watch your child have a lot of fun!
The local NHS chapter is doing a second induction this year. The dinner will begin at 5:00 PM on Sunday, May 20th, and is by invitation only. At 6:00 PM, the induction ceremony will begin. This event will be held at the Askov Community Center.
Also on Sunday, May 20th, East Central will be holding the first annual Sandstone-Askov-East Central Hall of Fame Induction in combination with the National Honor Society Induction. The event is geared towards honoring current East Central students and post-graduate students of Sandstone-Askov-East Central in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Hall of Fame Inductees were nominated throughout the month of April by community and family members. Nine post graduates were selected from the nominations to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. 2012 inductees include: Arla Budd (Class of 1962), Chester Gustafson (Class of 1965), Bradley Jensen (Class of 1978), Dr. Linden K. Johnson (Class of 1954), Patrick "Pat" Mee (Class of 1961), Vern Mikkelsen (Class of 1954), Anita "Sparky" Nelson (Class of 1948), Philip Pesheck (Class of 1972), and Chris Thorvig (Class of 1962).
And finally, the last day of school for students is Tuesday, June 5th.
